About

I am Head of the Graduate Research School and Director of the Centre for Research-informed Teaching at the University of Central Lancashire.

I am also Head of the British Shakespeare Association and Chair of the British Conference of Undergraduate Research.

My research interests include:

Contemporary Shakespeare Performance
Research-informed Teaching
Shakespeare's History Plays


I am the author of Shakespeare in Performance: The Henry VI Plays (with Carol Rutter), The Shakespeare Handbooks: Measure for Measure and Othello, and the co-editor of Shakespeare's Histories and Counter-Histories.

I am currently editing Shakespeare and the Making of Theatre for Palgrave and commissioning books for a new series, Shakespeare in Practice.

I speak regularly around the country and abroad on Shakespeare in performance and Research-informed Teaching. I currently chair the Board of Trustees and Directors of the British Shakespeare Association (www.britishshakespeare.ws)

I have nearly 20 years experience of Higher Education and Curriculum Development. I devised the first Drama degree at the University of Central Lancashire and I have been involved in numerous course developments since. I am also experienced at quality assurance and enhancement.

I run the Centre for Research-informed Teaching at the University of Central Lancashire and in that capacity work with colleagues from all disciplines to strengthen the relationship between teaching and research. I am particularly interested in developing research experiences for undergraduate students. I edit the book series Impact: Linking Teaching and Learning at UCLan, and I manage Diffusion: the UCLan Journal of Undergraduate Research, the UCLan Journal of Pedagogic Research and the Undergraduate Research Intern Scheme.

I am also running the first British Conference of Undergraduate Research, 19th-20th April 2011, at the University of Central Lancashire, Preston.
